Compare WEBM with RM

Format introduction WebM is a video file format. It is primarily intended to offer a royalty-free alternative to use in the HTML5 video tag. It has a sister project WebP for images. The development of the format is sponsored by Google, and the corresponding software is distributed under a BSD license. RealMedia is a proprietary multimedia container format created by RealNetworks. Its extension is ".rm". It is typically used in conjunction with RealVideo and RealAudio and is used for streaming content over the Internet. Typically these streams are in CBR, but a container for VBR streams, named RMVB, has been developed.
Technical details The WebM container is based on a profile of Matroska. WebM initially supported VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams. In 2013 it was updated to accommodate VP9 video and Opus audio. Support of RealMedia is available in a few multimedia players for different architectures/platforms, including RealPlayer, the Real Alternative codec pack and the open source DAP firmware Rockbox.
