Electronic book (or e-book) is a book or any periodical is available in digital form, consisting of text and images, read on a computer or other electronic devices. In the late 1990s, the consortium formed the requirements for developing the Open eBook format as a way to provide a single source document for authors and publishers through which various software and hardware platforms could display to the user. The open eBook form is defined as subsets of XHTML and CSS, a set of graphic formats, and also includes XML schemas for the "manifest", for enumerating the components of this format, as well as defining the table of contents, storing the cover, and so on. This format led to the open format EPUB.
